International Society of Typographic Designers –
Contest Entry
After selecting a prompt from 4 unique options, this website became an exploration of the utility of variable fonts. Part of experimenting with these font types is the constant adjustments in glyph height, width, and form. These morphing fonts are changed using a scroll bar, rather than choosing a point size. I noticed that this opened up the opportunity to create unique motion graphics with the letterforms of the font. The result is a single scroll website showcasing Noboto Flex and the opportunity it creates for the designer to improvise in composition. This job of improvisation was then compared to the job of a percussionist, who has the freedom to improvise in music, within the compositions structural parameters. This comparison with percussion then became the content of the website. Visually, the graphics mimic the ballistic quality of percussive noises, and compliments the stimulation of the ear, with the retinal stimulation of Op Art.
